Why?
I’ve realised recently that I’ve stopped talking about why I started my coaching journey, my true driver beneath it all.
I’ve stopped talking about my ‘why’ because I’ve been so caught up in getting my content, branding, and social media strategies just right (although it’s probably clear that I’ve given up on that because I’m not going to be put in a box just to suit what various gurus say I should be doing).
This is the beauty of a portfolio career, to the outsider looking in it seems like I do a jumbled mismatch of stuff I’m either pretty good at, I enjoy, or both.
The reality is, every single element of my portfolio career keeps me closer to my why that you’d probably realise.
Today, thanks to my ‘proper’ job and my role there as Chair of the Domestic Abuse Support Network I attended a Domestic Abuse Champions Network hosted by MK:act and I was reminded once again of my why.
For those that don’t know me, the majority of my adult life was marred by domestic abuse. Both my ex-husbands were abusive, and then my next relationship after those was abusive too. That led me down paths that almost resulted in me ending my life before embarking on a somewhat dubious ‘career’ path for a short while that I wouldn’t recommend.
However, it was those experiences that led me to study for my psychology degree, and then train to become a life coach, hypnotherapist and time-line therapist ™. Thanks to those experiences I wrote and published two books, launched a podcast, and started to speak on stages about my experiences and how creating strong, healthy and robust relationships is one of the most empowering things you can do.
In recent months I’ve turned to female empowerment, calling upon those experiences once more as examples of how I turned my life around to be where I am today.
Whilst I have the education, training and qualifications to do what I now do, it’s those lived experiences that give me the greatest insight, empathy and understanding into what my clients are going through and how and why they want to change.
The drive and motivation that took me from the darkest, lowest places it’s possible to be to where I am now, are the drivers and motivators that keep me doing so much.
In my ‘day job’ I get to help colleagues who may be victims of domestic abuse whilst educating an employer and industry influencer about how to make the workplace a safe space for victims and survivors of domestic abuse.
As a coach, author and speaker, I get to empower women who are survivors of domestic abuse to create their own Blockbuster Life.
I also get to meld both the ‘proper’ job and my coaching to empower EAs, PAs and VAs who may or may not be victims or survivors of domestic abuse to create their Blockbuster Life.
And as an actor, I get to work on a secret project that will enable me to bring empowerment to many, many other women in a way that hasn’t been seen before.
My ‘why’ is and always has been to empower women to create strong, healthy and robust relationships whilst creating their Blockbuster lives. The most important relationship being the one they have with themselves.
Within that simple sentence are multiple layers that touch on so many aspects of every woman’s life.
I’m choosing to focus on EAs, PAs and Vas because I know intimately the challenges and pressures of the role. I know how they mask what’s really going on for them whether that’s domestic abuse, lack of satisfaction in the workplace, lack of self confidence or self-esteem, because I’ve been there.
But that doesn’t mean that I can’t or don’t want to help other women who seek my assistance.
My overarching, sometimes overwhelming, why is to help 1,000,000 women to create strong, healthy and robust relationships whilst creating their Blockbuster Lives because in so doing I help them to model strong, healthy and robust relationships to their children, who will go on to model them to their children. And in doing that we start to reduce the prevalence of domestic abuse and create generations of empowered women and young people who understand the importance of boundaries, self-respect, self-esteem, and self-confidence.
That jumbled hotch-potch of things I call a portfolio career all lead to the same destination, I simply choose multiple vehicles to get me there.
